Using the framework laid down, they examine how that magic mirror reflects some of our most basic societal concepts: heroes, monsters, violence, storytelling itself, and even time. In the final chapter, the authors conclude the argument that the fantasy film is "a magic mirror that can reflect back to us our dreams and visions, in some way transformed" (123). Both chapters, though necessarily basic, are nevertheless good introductions to the essential elements and are supportive of the author's central argument. The third chapter examines how filmmakers have pushed the envelope of technology to support realistic or believable fantasy stories with evermore believable visions, beginning with Méliès and continuing through the rise of CGI. Stresses this essential realism from various theoretical viewpoints, including Campbell's monomyth, Propp's approach to narrative, and Lacan's and Mulvey's feminist approaches.
